Along with the improved treatment results for malignant tumors in recent years, longer-term QOL during the follow-up period has become important. One of the factors drastically af fecting the quality of life is lymphedema, a condition that occurs even more frequently when radiation therapy is added to the post-surgical treatment of breast cancer and uterine cancer. Yet the control of lymphedema is not necessarily handled appropriately, and patients are often unsure about which hospital department to consult. Itsuo Kato, an Emeritus Professor at the University of Tokushima who has been working enthusiastically on the treatment of lymphedema for many years, is the primary organizer of the “Shikoku Lymphedema Treatment Conference, an annual event that rotates between the four provinces of Shikoku. The highlights of the most recent conference, held in Kochi in July 2015, were four enthusiastic presentations, and demonstrations and training workshops for compression therapy and lymphatic massages. Information on the control and treatment of lymphedema was exchanged among medical practitioners, and the lectures were also opened to the public in recognition of the importance of teaching patients and their families about the daily control of lymphedema. Regretfully, many medical practitioners and members of the public were unable to participate. The doctors who presented at the conference have therefore collaborated on an article with a view to publishing it as a feature in this medical journal. Please see the “Journal of Orthopedics 58:603-609,2015” for details on the lecture presented by Doctor Masataka Noguchi of the Tanaka Orthopedic Clinic, entitled “The Surgical Treatment of Lymphedema.”A Japanese translation of “Lymphedema Management,” a book covering ever ything about lymphedema from a scholarly perspective through to treatment (edited by Dr. Itsuo Kato), was published in January of this year (Gaia Books, ISBN-10:4882829401). We recommend this book and are convinced it will serve as a very valuable reference. This article has raised the quality of lymphedema treatment in Kochi prefecture to an unprecedented level. We would like to introduce it in this feature in the hope of bringing its benefits to more people still.
